Construction Features in the Regions of Seismic Activity

In areas with seismic activity special antiseismic measures are taken in the design and construction of buildings. Such measures take into consideration the soil features and structural solutions for buildings which are developed for both underground and above-ground parts of the constructed objects.

Subsidence soils are the main characteristics of these areas. To use them as a basis for the foundation the methods of complete or partial elimination of subsidence properties of soils, full or partial cutting of soils are used. To eliminate the subsidence soils are wide, the builders utilize the methods of compaction heavy ramming; compaction pre-soaking and soil piles. The cutting of soils is usually performed by applying prismatic and pyramidal piles. In areas with seismic activity, along with monolithic strip or column foundations, pile foundations are increasingly applied, especially effective one.

Depending on the number of stories, seismicity of the construction area and other factors in the standard projects, various constructive solutions of the connections are made, based on the general principle − reinforcement issues or embedded parts of the ends of the combined elements are welded during installation. As a result, the connection of adjacent elements and their joint work under operational loads is ensured.

The functional purpose of joints of internal wall panels and a floor is the integration of prefabricated elements into a unique monolithic system.

Therefore, the main purpose of the butt joint elements is to provide a reliable connection of structural elements in terms of strength and crack resistance. That is why the joints are the most important parts of the entire system of large-panel housing construction in seismic areas.

The most expedient solution in these conditions would be the conjugation of elements by connecting the reinforcement outlets directly with each other in order to transfer the pine forces without additional bending moments arising from the overlapping compounds. A seismic resistance of wall panel interfaces is provided by the use of welded joints of reinforcement outlets and linings.

Currently, in the construction of high-rise buildings, construction companies are trying to use the high-strength steel. This material reinforces in the interior of the ceilings and walls and columns. This makes possible to obtain a flexible design. It gives the building a special strength, holding all parts of the structure together.
