The purpose of buildings constructed rather is past or nowadays is to be seen and inhabited. However, in the past, there was little understanding of how design may influence people’s feelings and thoughts.  In spite of this fact, the architects found a way to build amazing structures and impress inhabitants. Nonetheless, there was a lack of comprehension of how architecture interacted with citizens.

In the last decade, some impressive researches on a previously unknown realm of science were conducted. Students of architect schools have neuroscience classes in conjunction with metropolitan design. Private as well as public sectors want to use the architectural psychology to improve the operations.

For instance, a lot of companies are looking for a design which would inspire the employees and motivate them. The most important elements are natural lightning (to boost vitality and happiness) and color (to create comfortable motivation or calm atmosphere).

One more example which shows how design impacts our mind is an approach to build particular residential ambiance for elderly.  Such demand is increasing as the number of late-middle-aged people grows. For instance, a specific arrangement should be created for persons with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Thus the design avoids open spaces and has cozy accommodations.

Sometimes the architecture has a negative impact on the residents. For instance, the tower-block public housing, which was built in 1954, had a minimalist design because of lack of government funds and caused depression among people. Most of the buildings were not occupied because of unpleasant living conditions.  Thus, it was demolished ten years later.

Luckily, due to the growing understanding of the connection between human mind and buildings, the unfavorable consequences could be avoided. At the present time, we may enjoy the golden age of architecture as the constructions are built with the sense of understanding of inhabitants’ needs.
