Houseboats in Amsterdam – Life on the Water. Fashionable or Convenient

The channels create a unique image of the capital of the Netherlands. There are 165 of them in the city. Several hundred bridges were built over the channels – old ones, made of wood and steel, with intricate designs. The Central parts of some bridges are raised to let ships with high masts pass.

The water channels of Amsterdam are also used as a place to live. There are about 2,500 boathouses in the capital and around it, which are inhabited by almost 5,000 people. The outlook of such homes is unusual. There is more romance than convenience. However, the lived-in barges are another distinctive feature of Amsterdam.

Firstly the houseboats were inexpensive. Their acquisition allowed the retired seamen to settle in the center of Amsterdam. After the end of World War II, when the city was experiencing a shortage of housing, boat houses have become an alternative to conventional homes. Later they became fashionable and prices increased sharply.

A lot of travelers dream of making tours to Amsterdam and have an experience of living on the water. Floating houses look so romantic! What rooms can one find inside? Two or three small rooms, small kitchen, shower, and toilet. This “apartment” is poorly ventilated, the humidity is high and in winter pipes and windows freeze.

However, houseboats are still in demand. Prices for them continue growing, which is due not only to fashion but also to the decrease in the number of moorings. The Dutch authorities are trying to limit the number of houses located on the water. Therefore, obtaining a license for the berth is becoming increasingly difficult. In addition, there are many rules that you need to know when buying an unusual house.

A residential barge is not cheap: it costs around 150-250,000. It needs to be regularly repaired, and the taxes should be paid. Moreover, any external changes to the boat cannot be made without the permission of local authorities.

Moored boats must stay from each other by not less than 2 m, and not less than 7 m. from the bridge. Such conditions are necessary for the security of keeping the illusion of privacy and freedom.
